In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we’re providing a truly tasty, healthy holiday treat you won’t want to miss–Whole-wheat Irish Soda Bread! Not only is this bread a St. Patrick’s Day staple, but it’s an ideal feast for the taste buds when it comes to getting a true sense of Irish culture.

Ready to start? Let’s begin!

First, preheat your oven to 450 degrees FYou will need to coat a baking sheet with cooking spray, as well as sprinkle the sheet with a small bit of flour.

For this recipe you will need:

  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tsp baking soda
  • 1 Tsp salt
  • 2 ¼ cups of buttermilk

STEP 1: Once you have everything assembled and ready, whisk the whole-wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt together in a large bowl. Make a nice well in the middle and pour in your buttermilk.

STEP 2: Next, using one hand, stir your mixture together in smooth, full circles until everything is blended. You want your dough to be nice and soft without being too wet or sticky. Consistency is important! Once that’s done, turn out your dough onto a well-floured surface. Make sure to wash your hands as well to free of any lingering dough!

STEP 3: Take some flour and coat your hands with it. Then, pat and roll the dough gently with your hands to give it a good round shape. Flip the dough over and flatten it slightly to about 2 inches. Then you’ll want to move your newly-constructed loaf onto the prepared baking sheet.

STEP 4: Mark the loaf with a deep cross using a serrated knife. Prick each of the four sections of the dough.

STEP 5: Place baking sheet with loaf into the oven. Bake your bread for 20 minutes before reducing your oven temperature to 400 degreesThen, continue baking until the loaf is brown on top and sounds hollow when tapped. This process can take 30 to 35 more minutes.

STEP 6: Transfer the loaf to a wire rack and let it cool for about 30 minutes.

STEP 7: Eat and enjoy!

There really is nothing like the taste of fresh-baked bread! Enjoy your holiday with a sumptuous feast and share with friends and family!
